"Who do you sound like?" That's the question most often asked when someone is told the person they are talking to is a singer/songwriter. And it's not like they don't mean well. People want a reference. Now imagine learning someone just welcomed a new-born baby into their family. Would the first question be "Whose baby does it look like?" Not likely. The mother or father might argue that the baby's smile, nose, eyes or temperament favors one or the other, but they most certainly would not pull out the Big Book of Well-Known Babies and point to page fifty-three, third column, first row, fourth one in and say "that's the one our baby looks like". No. Because it's their baby. And it can't be compared with another. To them, that's clear to see. So it is with a singer/songwriter. I'm just trying to write the truth as I see it, and I hope when you listen, you hear it. So, who do I sound like? I'm just trying to sound like me.

Take equal parts social commentary, life observations and humor, toss in a blender, hit the switch, and you'll have yourself this tasty treat. Drink up!

If you wonder what genre this album falls under, I can only reply that you should imagine what might result from a meeting between Homer and Homer and Jethro.

If you have read the Iliad, you know Homer was pretty good at spinnin' a yarn (if you haven't read it, just go to Wikipedia, the internet's CliffsNotes. And if you don't know what CliffsNotes are, once again, go to Wikipedia. Suddenly, I can't help but picture a dog chasing its tail...).

Anyhow, Homer. While few will argue the notion of his being considered the greatest of ancient Greek poets, there is little known as to who he actually was. Apparently, he didn't have a facebook page ("...hangin' with my homeboy Achilles waitin' for Zeus to decide whether or not to throw down some thunderbolts to further test the will of those pesky Greeks...check out my live twitter feed...it's gonna be boomin'!!!...and a quick call out to anybody who has an idea how to help Achilles deal with that pain in his heel...his complaining is starting to get on my nerves...can a brother get a gel pad..??!!").

Who Homer really was can be debated. What cannot be questioned was the level of his craft. He spoke in a narrative style that had never been done before. His descriptions of battles waged, blood spilled and gods seduced led some to refer to him as "he who puts voice in the tune".

Homer used the gods as metaphors for the human condition.

Homer and Jethro used superb musicianship and humor to deflate the gods of musical complacency with their skillfully written and performed song parodies. They were the self-described "thinking man's hillbillies". Some gave them the more denigrating title of "America's song butchers". But those critics who didn't get it only served to egg them on even more. How many "serious" artists will introduce a song by saying "this next number is one we've had little or no success with.."? Self-deprecation sure beats self-flagellation. Especially when it can be backed up with killer performing. Do yourself a favor: look up "The Battle of Kookamonga" on youtube, watch it, and decide for yourself.

So what might happen if Bill and Ted ever engineered up a meeting between Homer and Homer and Jethro? Well, right off the bat, there'd be a whole new take on "The Battle of New Orleans"...('In one-one-nine-four, we took a little trip, along with Polydamas and that Aphrodite chick...").

After that, it would be just a matter of everybody sitting around swapping stories, tellin' tales and tellin' lies.

And beer. There would have to be beer.

After all, I live in Wisconsin.

Happy listening!
